SEND is involved in various projects working with ethnic Filipinos. The week coworkers were getting ready for a Kindergarten graduation, a fire broke out in the community destroying 150 squatter homes and the school. It was devastating especially because Kindergarten graduation is the biggest event of the year and the kids and teachers put so much preparation into the program.
Well, teams of people came together and got materials to remake kids' costumes, the teachers reprinted certificates, someone found a place to rent kids' gowns and caps and a place to have the graduation.
Filipinos go all out for Kindergarten graduation, it's almost a bigger than Grade 12 grad. The kids get new clothes, extended family members gather, a big feast is prepared. . . I've asked why it's such a huge event and the best answer someone gave me was that it was a celebration of childhood. I'd say that's a good reason to have a big party.
